How to Shop Your Local Farmers Market Without Bringing Home Clutter
Sep 13, 2026
There’s something about a farmers market that just feels good.
Fresh produce. Local vendors. Homemade goodies. Flowers, baked goods, jams, honey, handmade products, and probably at least one thing you didn’t plan on buying but suddenly need.
Here in South Louisiana, we’re lucky to have some wonderful options for shopping local.
Whether you’re visiting the Hammond Farmers & Artisans Market, heading to the Covington Farmers Market, or stopping at a local produce stand in Hammond or Ponchatoula, a Saturday morning at the market can be a fun way to connect with our community and enjoy what’s in season.
But there’s one little problem I see all the time:
It’s easy to bring home more than you can actually use.
And before you know it, your refrigerator is packed with beautiful produce, your counter is covered with market finds, and you’re wondering what happened to the organized kitchen you had yesterday.
So this year, instead of giving you another list of things to pack for the farmers market, let’s talk about how to shop the market with intention, and actually use what you bring home.
1. Shop for the week you’re actually having
It’s tempting to buy produce because it looks beautiful.
And I get it.
A basket of fresh tomatoes? Yes.
A gorgeous bunch of greens? Absolutely.
Those peaches? Into the bag they go.
But before you buy, think about your actual week.
Are you going to be home for dinner most nights? Do you have a busy week coming up? Are you traveling? Do you already have meals planned?
A farmers market can be a great place to build your meal plan around what looks good, rather than planning every meal first and then shopping for specific ingredients.
For example, if you find beautiful tomatoes, fresh herbs and peppers, think about what you could make with them this week.
The goal isn’t to buy everything that looks good.
The goal is to buy what you will actually use.
2. Give your farmers market finds a home before you leave the house
This is where a little home organization can make a big difference.
Before your market trip, take a quick look at your refrigerator and pantry.
Do you have room for what you’re planning to buy?
If your refrigerator is already packed, bringing home three bags of fresh produce isn’t going to make your life easier.
You may even want to do a quick refrigerator reset before your market trip.
Toss anything that has gone bad, use up produce that’s on its last leg, and create a little breathing room for the fresh items you’re about to bring home.
Because here’s the thing:
Buying fresh food is only helpful if you can see it, store it and use it.
3. Don’t turn the farmers market into your new clutter source
Farmers markets aren’t just about produce.
There are often candles, soaps, artwork, kitchen items, handmade goods, seasonal decorations, bags, jewelry and all kinds of fun things.
And while I love supporting local makers, it’s worth asking yourself one simple question before buying:
Where will this live when I get home?
If you don’t have a place for it, that’s a sign to pause.
You don’t need to stop yourself from buying something you love. Just make sure you’re bringing home something you genuinely want, not something you’re buying simply because it’s cute, seasonal or available.
An organized home isn’t about never buying anything.
It’s about being intentional about what comes through the door.
4. Let the season do some of the meal planning for you
One of my favorite things about shopping locally is that it naturally encourages you to eat what’s in season.
Instead of searching Pinterest for ten complicated recipes, start with what you brought home.
Fresh vegetables can become a simple side dish.
Fruit can become breakfast, a snack or dessert.
Fresh herbs can completely change a simple dinner.
And if you bought more than you can eat this week, look for ways to preserve it, freeze it or share it.
This is also a great strategy for busy Household CEOs who don’t want meal planning to become another overwhelming task.
Sometimes the easiest meal plan is simply:
What do we already have? What needs to be used? What can I make from that?
5. Have a “market reset” when you get home
Don’t leave your farmers market haul sitting in bags on the kitchen counter all day.
Take a few minutes to put everything away intentionally.
Wash or prep what needs to be washed.
Store produce properly.
Put pantry items where they belong.
Move anything that needs to be eaten soon to a spot where you’ll see it.
And if you bought something specifically for a meal, make a note of it on your calendar or meal plan.
This small step can make a huge difference.
You’re not just putting groceries away.
You’re setting yourself up to actually use them.
6. Shop local, but shop with purpose
One of the best things about living on the Louisiana Northshore is having access to local farmers, growers, makers and small businesses.
The Hammond Farmers & Artisans Market is held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Downtown Pavilion in Downtown Hammond. It’s a year-round market featuring local food and artisan vendors. (Downtown Hammond)
You can also find fresh, seasonal produce at local produce markets like:
Berry Town Produce
Address: 2600 W Church St, Hammond, LA 70401
and
Deluxe Harvest
Address: 14065 W Club Deluxe Rd, Hammond, LA 70403
If you’re willing to venture a little farther around the Northshore, the Covington Farmers Market is another local favorite, with markets on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
The point isn’t to visit every market or buy everything available.
It’s to find the places you enjoy, support local businesses and farmers, and bring home things that add value to your life.
A farmers market can be part of an organized life
Organization isn’t about making everything rigid or perfectly planned.
It’s about making everyday life work a little better.
A Saturday morning at the farmers market can be part of that.
You can enjoy a cup of coffee, browse the vendors, buy something delicious, support a local business and come home with fresh ingredients for the week; all without creating another pile of things you have to deal with.
So the next time you head out to a farmers market in Hammond, Ponchatoula, Covington or somewhere else around the Louisiana Northshore, enjoy the experience.
Just remember:
You don’t have to bring home everything you love.
Bring home what you’ll use, give it a place to live, and enjoy it while it’s fresh.
That’s organization that works in real life.
