Everyone Can Help

This is the fourth post in the series I am currently writing to help you create and maintain a tidy home. In previous posts, I have written about starting small and staying consistent, regularly decluttering, and routines! This post falls right in line in the series.
Everyone Can Help
In order to maintain a tidy home without losing your sanity, it is important to get everyone in the home involved. Keeping a tidy home is a team effort. So, how do you do this?
Assign age-appropriate chores to family members and establish a cleaning schedule that works for everyone. For example, 5 year olds can sort clean socks and match the pairs together. This teaches needed life skills such as sorting and folding laundry. If you make it game-like (beat the timer), it will be even more fun and challenging. Another example, teens are more than capable of cooking, or cleaning the kitchen, or completing their own laundry. Now, I’m not suggesting that we overwhelm children with tasks, but they should have some responsibility to maintaining the home’s tidiness. Whatever you assign to the children, make it age-appropriate and keep in mind the other responsibilities the child has such as homework and extra-curricular activities.
Adults should each pitch in and help maintain tidiness throughout the home. Sometimes we have unspoken expectations that each adult in the home will take care of specific duties (example: man takes out trash, woman washes clothes). While this is fine, if the trash goes unattended for awhile, and no one feels that it is his/her responsibility, a real mess can occur. Resentment and bitterness can begin to stir if one person in the family feels responsible for too much because things simply aren’t getting done. It would be better to discuss various chores, assign a person to each, and discuss the maintenance expectation. For example: dad will load the dishwasher daily and start a load each evening; mom will unload the dishwasher each morning.
Once everyone is on board and completing their delegated tasks, notice the peace that comes from having order in the home and the pride that each family member takes in helping to achieve and maintain the order.
